Charlie’s on Broadway

How I heard of this place: Through my friends Bayan & Paul, who enjoy playing 75-cent pool until the wee hours of the morning.
Type of cuisine: Pub grub – burgers, potato skins, nachos, take your pick.
Ambiance: Old, gentleman’s pub – large interior with many quartered off spaces for eating in booth seating or at the bar and around the back to more booth seating. Dark, wooden furnishings with leather accents. Dim lighting and almost no natural light greet you as you enter the unassuming, small doorway.
What I ordered: On this occasion, only two in our party of six ordered a dish. The rest of us were intent on waiting for a pool table to open up. One ordered the cheeseburger off of the happy hour menu ($4.50), which came, by itself, on a small plate, and a lemonade ($2.50). The second ordered off of the regular menu and selected the mushroom Swiss burger ($9.95) which came with a side of fries and blue cheese dressing. Given the minimum drink order in the bar, she also ordered a non-alcoholic beverage (maybe strawberry lemonade for $2.50). I was offered a sample of the fries and mushroom burger.
What I loved: The sauteed mushrooms on the burger were caramelized and juicy, adding to the thick burger. The blue cheese added a side of pungency and flavor to the fries and burger!
Why I loved it: Our server was friendly, attentive and entertaining. She was gracious in knowing that only two in our party of six was eating and offered to put our names on the wait list for a pool table. The space is completely unpretentious and casual. It’s open late and the pool tables are inexpensive, so it makes for a fun – and cheap – evening out with friends.
Cost: Average ($5 average happy hour prices, with a mandatory purchase of drink; $10 for burgers)
