Jewel of India

How I heard of this place: My first introduction to Jewel of India was through the Entertainment Book many moons ago. This time, our out-of-town overnight guests were craving Indian food and free parking, so we searched for a Groupon, and were ready to return to Jewel of India.

Type of cuisine: Traditional Indian fare, including curries, tandoori cuisine and sides galore!

Ambiance: Simple, without pretense, the semblance of a family-owned operation with minimal decor and dim lighting.

What I ordered: Four diners, four chicken dishes, including Butter Chicken ($11.95): boneless chicken breast cubes cooked in a creamy tomato sauce, Kashmiri Chicken ($11.95): boneless chicken breast cooked with yogurt, garlic and mild spices garnished with cashews and almonds, Chicken Tikka Masala ($11.95): boneless tandoori chicken breast tikka in a special curry sauce, and Chicken Mango Curry ($11.95): tender pieces of chicken sautéed with Major Grey Mango Chutney and a special blend of spices.

And two garlic naan ($2.50 each), baked fresh in the tandoor oven, on the side!

What I loved: I was most delighted by the Kashmiri Chicken, which I had never had until this meal. The creaminess, the buttery-ness and the light cashew flavor with ample spice truly held my attention.

Why I loved it: Simple, plentiful food served family style.

Cost: Low to average ($10.95 – $13.95 per dinner entree)
