How I heard of this place: While perusing the Victoria Clipper Magazine, I was drawn to the sunset picture of houseboats in Fisherman’s Wharf and read on for more information. The floating village happened to be on the opposite side of the city from where we would be, but knowing that we would be close to Cook Street Village after the Inaugural International Kite Festival, we decided to make it a part of our journey home, along the residential areas surrounding Beacon Hill Park.

Type of cuisine: Paying homage to our Italian roots with a commitment to simple and fresh ingredients on traditional wood-fired, thin crust pizzas. Our mission is to provide delicious food in a fun and playful environment.

Neapolitan pizza captures the pure essence of simple and delicious Italian food. Pizzeria Prima Strada practices the traditional techniques of the masters by using Caputo 00 flour, Italian plum tomatoes and local ingredients, including Mozzarella di Bufala from Fairburn Farm on Vancouver Island. When cooked, Neapolitan pizza should be crispy, tender and fragrant.”

Pizzeria Prima Strada Specials

The inspiration for Pizzeria Prima Strada stems from a passion for the authentic, fire-roasted pizzas born in Naples and found throughout Italy. For a century and a half, the pizza makers of Naples (or “pizzaioli” as they are known in their home town) have been producing unique mouth-watering pizzas using the freshest ingredients available. It is estimated nearly 7 million of these pizzas are produced in Italy every day.

Ambiance: Like the best neighborhood restaurants you’ll find worldwide, Pizzeria Prima Strada is a labor of love. We felt what was missing in Victoria’s culinary scene was a neighborhood pizzeria. A place you can walk to with your family and friends and have a great food experience. We wanted to create a warm, inviting environment where you can see your food being made and enjoy our version of a taste of Italy.”

What I ordered: We started with the salad of the day: shaved fennel, mixed heirloom tomatoes, arugula, and parmesan in a pesto vinaigrette (CAD$10).

The pizza of choice: Quattro Formaggi (CAD$14.50) with fresh mozzarella, parmigiano, fontina, gorgonzola married with garlic and oregano on a freshly baked, thin crust base.

What I loved: The salad’s refreshing, summer crispness, sweet tomatoes against the bitter fennel, peppery arugula against the melt-in-your-mouth pesto vinaigrette. As for the pizza itself, the gorgonzola stole the show – and in every good way possible. Ooo Wee.

Why I loved it: Romantic, yet family friendly setting, the perfect spot for a neighborhood eatery with all the flavor and ambiance of a sultry and casual dinner date; a place serving delicious fare, house-made gelato and worth every cent.

Cost: Average (CAD$13 – CAD$17 per pizza)
