How I heard of this place: Two of my friends from Lynden, Washington, one Canadian, one American would splurge on an annual birthday dinner at Gotham. When we drove by it on our way to our hotel in Gastown for my husband’s birthday weekend, the establishment immediately made it to our must-do list!

Type of cuisine: Dinner at Gotham is a delight, from the rich ambiance to the wealth of flavours. The dinner menu features classic steakhouse favourites, perfectly prepared and presented. Our seafood is delicate and fresh—huge, tender lobster tails, and fresh-from-the-sea oysters and more—and the beef is prime Alberta, dry-aged for 28 days, and seasoned carefully to bring out the big flavour guests expect from a premium steakhouse.

Ambiance: Surround yourself in the elegance of art deco and the warmth of mahogany wood. The opulent surroundings are designed to help you savour the richness of your wine, the smoothness of that scotch, and of course the flavourful tenderness of the steak. Gotham serves only the best prime Alberta beef, prepared to your liking, and the freshest seafood, accompanied by our extensive and wide-ranging wine list. Our guests can also savour Vancouver’s lovely temperate evenings in Gotham’s Urban Garden Patio, an escape in the heart of the city for cocktails or dinner al fresco.

Gotham Dining

Gotham Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar is in the heart of Vancouver, surrounded by the city’s finest hotels, shops and entertainment venues. The décor is designed to help guests shed the worries of the day with a traditional steakhouse feel, featuring rich velvets, warm colours, glossy dark woods, and art deco details. Sitting in one of the comfortable club chairs and enjoying a perfect martini, it’s possible to forget that there’s a world outside. And Gotham features an outdoor escape as well, our Urban Garden Patio. It’s the perfect location to relax and enjoy the warm weather, nestled in the heart of the city.

Gotham Kitchen & Dining

Gotham is housed in one of Vancouver’s few remaining art deco buildings at 615 Seymour Street. Built in 1933 and designed by architect Max Downing, who also designed other small art deco buildings around British Columbia, the façade of the building features cast concrete art deco ornamentation of stylized flowers across the top. The building was restored in 1996 for Gotham Steakhouse and stands today as a beautiful reminder of Vancouver’s rich history.”

What I ordered: We were offered half a round of warmed onion bead, sliced and whipped butter to begin our meal, but didn’t let that stop us from ordering among the plentiful appetizers.

First, large glass of cranberry juice ($3.95) and a Spinach Salad ($11.95) with hard cooked egg, bacon, mushrooms and honey dijon dressing,

and an off-the-menu order of the Cheese Toast ($6.95), highly recommended by a local!

For our main entrees, and in celebration of my husband’s birthday, he chose the 24-ounce Porterhouse Steak  ($62.95),

while I opted for a slightly lighter Garlic Shrimp ($36.95).

As with most upscale steakhouses, all sides are served family style, and on the side. We chose three: Spiced Sauteed Mushrooms ($10.50/$6.83 for .65 order as recommended by our server),

Potato Lyonnaise ($9.95/$6.47 for .65 order),

Gotham Lyonnaise Potatoes

and the Cauliflower Gratin ($10.95).

In order to fully celebrate the birthday, we had to have dessert, and chose the one most enthusiastically recommended by our server – who had not led us astray the entire meal: Old Fashioned Chocolate Brownie ($11), topped with vanilla bean ice cream and both a chocolate and caramel drizzle.

What I loved: The spinach salad and the cheese toast were definitely a highlight of the meal for me. In fact, I would have been sufficiently satisfied having enjoyed those and the birthday brownie! However, the sauce in which the garlic shrimp were swimming was perfectly tangy and rich and a simple complement to the soft shrimp.

I was also highly surprised at the quality and cut of each side of the Porterhouse. My husband requested the steak be cooked to medium, from which I often stray (due to the oozing red that covers the plate with each cut); however this was pink and tender yet grilled to tasty perfection. In fact, dare I say, I would have ordered my own had I known.

Why I loved it: The sultry elegance of the establishment within walking distance of our hotel paired with the exquisite food and the honest, sincere and professional service we received from Luca, our server cannot be beat. Gotham is a must for anyone traveling to Vancouver and wishing to enjoy a meal with a special someone.
