Boomers Outside

How I heard of this place: Back in my university days, the Western Washington University (WWU) Blue Book, free with every purchase of quarterly books from the University Bookstore, always contained a coupon for Boomers. When two of my good friends and I would get together for an afternoon swim at Lake Samish, the only thing that would satisfy is a Boomers burger, waffle fries and a shake. This marked the beginning of my Boomers addiction.

Type of cuisine: Boomer’s great food has been a local family favorite for decades. Our customers have enjoyed the same great menu of gourmet Boomers Burgers, world-famous waffle fries, real hard ice cream milkshakes, yummy hot dogs, fresh salads and old-fashion car hop service for years.

Serving families in Bellingham since 1989, Boomer’s Drive-In has become a local icon. People who enjoyed Boomers as a child are now bringing their kids and grand kids to enjoy the same great food. Little about Boomers has changed over the years and we strive to keep it that way.

Two staples on the menu are Boomer’s Burgers and Boomer’s Milkshakes. Voted the best Bellingham Burgers time and time again, Boomer’s burgers are made with only the freshest ingredients and lots of them including Boomer’s special sauce.

Boomers Shakes

Boomer’s milkshakes are made by hand using real premium ice-cream from Whatcom’s own local Edaleen Dairy. There are dozens of flavors to choose from and mix together. Boomers milkshakes have become so popular, we now serve more milkshakes than all other drinks on the menu combined.”

Ambiance: Come inside and enjoy the warmth of our unique circular fireplace and the colorful mural that’s been up since the day we opened (We would love to know who painted it. Do you?)

Park under our lighted canopy and order from the comfort and convenience of your car. Turn on your lights and the car hop will be out to take your order just like they did in American drive-ins of yesteryear.

Our goal has always been for our guests to leave a little bit happier than when they arrived. It’s only hamburgers and we are unlikely to change the world. But we hope some of that incremental happiness we try to provide will create a butterfly effect and make the planet a little bit better place to be.”

What I ordered: Something new: The Guacamole Bacon Burger ($5.49) caught my attention with its real guacamole and bacon, topped with Pepper Jack Cheese, served on a toasted bun with light special sauce, fresh tomatoes, crisp lettuce and pickle.

My sister, on her initiation visit to Boomers, enjoyed Combo #1 ($7.49): a Boomer Burger, waffle fries, and a hard ice cream shake in the flavor of Mocha.

My husband chose the The Big Boom ($4.79), half pound of 100% ground beef served on a toasted sesame seed bun with lettuce, tomato, pickles and a special house sauce. He ordered a side of curly fries ($1.69) and a Salted Caramel Shake ($2.99) on the side.

What I loved: Shakes. The salted caramel won us all over. The waffle fries and curly fries never a disappointment. The burgers juicy, mouth-watering and plentiful. I only have one word to describe this experience: YUM-O.

Why I loved it: With food like that, and a mural like this, what’s not to love?

Cost: Low ($3.59 – $5.49 per burger, $6.39 – $7.49 for combo meals)
