The Golden State

How I heard of this place: My successful entrepreneur cousin recently opened her first store-front on North Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles! When we went to pay her a visit at her shop, she recommended lunch next door. Among the “top five burgers in LA”? We couldn’t refuse.

Type of cuisine: The Golden State is a talent show for the best makers of food and drink in California.  We love Samir’s food. We love Scoops gelato. We love breweries like Craftsman and wineries like Topanga Vineyards. We think products like these deserve a stage of their own. California is an easy place to love. It’s where we grew up. It’s what we know. And it tastes very good.

Burgers. Hot Dogs. Salads. Sides. A simple and limited menu ensuring that dedication and diligence is paid to each menu item.

The Golden State reflects our ongoing efforts to showcase the finest food and drink from California. We are thankful to be a part of your community and honored to cook you a meal using our state’s plentiful bounty.

Ambiance: Yellow. Blocks of yellow cover the windows of this establishment making it difficult to know what is going on inside.

Nevertheless, we enter. We are in awe as we step into the large, open space, tall ceilings, a brick wall on the right and local artists paintings throughout.

Exposed air ducts and and kitchen fixtures over the exposed kitchen lead the eyes to the loft space above, presumably office space or the employee break room.

We make our way across the concrete floor, past the wooden tables to the ordering counter, where we excitedly peruse the menu and place our orders.

What I ordered: My husband started with the Root Beer Float made with his choice: salted caramel ice cream ($5.50),

and continued with The Burger and a side of Fries ($13), Harris Ranch beef, Fiscalini Farms cheddar, glazed applewood smoked bacon, arugula, aioli, ketchup.

I chose The Burger with Fried Sweet Potato Wedges ($13) served with a garlic aioli.

My sister chose the Golden State Salad ($8) for arugula, romaine, Persian cucumbers, roasted red peppers, tomatoes and a balsamic dressing, topped with grilled chicken breast ($4).

My cousin stuck with The Burger and enjoyed a Cucumber Salad on the side, Persian cucumbers and arugula in a lemon vinaigrette.

What I loved: The juicy burger! It truly is a burger done right and has made it to my own, personal list for the Top Five burgers I have had!

So tempted, but too full to order it, the Maple Coffee ice cream sample in which I indulged was pure, creamy bliss. Go to The Golden State.

Get it.

You’re welcome.

Why I loved it: A completely unpretentious, casual setting with amazing food, local shop owners from down the street coming and going, excellent food and friendly staff. It’s truly a west coaster haven.

Cost: Average ($10 – $12 per burger with one side)
