How I heard of this place: My friend, Hillah, and new friend, Makeda chose this as a casual spot where we might sit, enjoy an appetizer and chat.

California Tortilla

Type of cuisine: “…fresh, made-to-order, delicious, award-winning signature burritos, quesadillas, salads, and other Cal-Mex favorites.” Their website also shares that “At California Tortilla, we use only the best ingredients like 100% Roma tomatoes and #1 Hass Avocados. We use fresh, never frozen, all white meat chicken breast and Grade A sirloin. And we hand craft our guac and salsa in small batches throughout the day. Our menu offers recipe-driven items created by chefs and prepared fresh for you. We do all this because California Tortilla is passionate about the customers who dine with us and we believe they deserve the very best.”

Ambiance: Their website boasts “Great Food & a Fun Vibe”, which describes it all. The bright and colorful space is noticeable, even on a dark winter night, through their windowed storefront. Yellows, reds, and greens abound! We entered, followed the pre-established line to the ordering counter, where large, bright menus hung overhead, placed our order, and and continued to follow the Charlie Brown t-shirt wall to our seats. The tables vibrant with mosaic-like painted designs in shades and hues of reds and yellows.

What I ordered: Plain Nachos ($4.99), white corn tortilla chips topped with velvety queso, jalapeño peppers, sour cream, handmade guac, chopped scallions, and fresh salsa.

What I loved: The fresh guacamole!

Why I loved it: Simple yet satisfying.

Cost: Low ($4.99 – $6.99 per meal-sized portion of nachos)
