(No website found at time of publishing) – Gulhane Park, Topkapi Palace, Istanbul, Turkey

How I heard of this place: My friend Aycan put me in touch with her sister Sevcan when I told her we would be in Istanbul for a few days. This was one of her recommendations for the best cay bahcesi (tea garden) in town! And I do believe she was spot on.

Type of cuisine: Tea. Turkish tea, pure and simple.

Ambiance: Wandering through the beautiful grounds of Gulhane Parki, Chris and I were happily enjoying our stoll in the sun while in search of this little-known (to those not local), but perfect tea garden. With views of the Sea of Marmara to Istanbul’s skyline across the Bosphorus, and the edges of Topkapi Palace to the right, this gem of a cay bahcesi is one not to miss. As you sit at one of hundreds of wooden chairs set against hearty, wooden tables, weathered, and still presentable, one cannot help but be mesmerized and in awe of the beauty of the landscape in front of you. Ferries and local cruise-ships making their way across the blue-blue Sea, and the quiet chirping of birds can be heard; trees hang overhead to create shadows from the sun as patrons enjoy miniature glass after glass of tea, served in traditional copper pots. One small hut with counterspace reserved for the high piles of teapots lies in wait for the tea-drinkers and customers at Cay Demlik Fiyatlari.

What I ordered: One pot of tea (17TL) for the three of us: Chris, myself and our new friend, who treated.

What I loved: I love the traditional presentation of the tea, only in pots. I love the miniature, handle-less glasses served on small plates that tip up along the edges in order to hold the sugar cubes.

Why I loved it: I love the view and the peaceful serenity experienced on an afternoon at Cay Demlik Fiyatlari.

Cost: Average (6TL for a one-person pot of tea, serving at least four cups-full)
